Both Deceased Students Identified in the Ivy League School Shooting as Authorities Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who lost their lives in the recent mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.
She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also shared condolences publicly, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause renewed concern for our city”.
The shooter began shooting inside a room in the building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that searched the hotel recovered two firearms and magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.
Condition of the Injured
Among those wounded, one pupil was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
More Condolences
Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that institution as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the group. “She was famed for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and peers and mourn the loss of his potential.”
