Can You Crack This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped the Contemporary World
One can find numerous candidates for the title of “world’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel required around ten lumberjacks working for three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, which converted timber into planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial and cultural supremacy across the continent and the globe.
The First True Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s first authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part transformed the rotary movement to vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Every component was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to integrate these parts in order that they operated in a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each descending stroke and moving on every upward stroke. This constituted a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”

Circular to Vertical
Construct a mechanism which converts circular motion to up-and-down motion. You have these components only: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two bars. A “guide”, which is a tube or sleeve into which one of the bars will fit perfectly. (Consider that you can mount components on a stand, so the components don’t collapse.)
