Scientific and Moral Debates

The Canadian federal government stated the food inspection agency was adhering to a eradication policy in order to limit the transmission of avian flu, a move in line with wider advice from global health organizations.

However, animal advocacy groups have urged the agency to conduct further testing on the animals to verify they are carrying the virus.

The farm owners said that because the last bird flu death happened on 15 January 2025, with the surviving majority appearing healthy or healed, the flock has developed at least partial herd immunity against H5N1.

They have also expressed skepticism on the scope and effectiveness of the tests on the ostriches.

Farm Spokesperson Reaction

On Thursday, the farm’s spokesperson, informed the press that the authority was “murdering” birds in good health.

“They are ancient creatures that have endured millions of years, but they will not survive the government agency,” she stated.

A federal court, however, determined that permitting the ostriches to stay alive could result in the spread of avian influenza to other animals, the poultry industry – or to humans.

The agency has not said at what time it expects to start slaughtering the ostriches.

Culling Methods

A 2016 agency manual, acquired under freedom of information laws, states the birds can be euthanized by different means, the preferred being lethal injection, which needs multiple individuals: one person to restrain the bird by restraining it, one to hold the head, and one to inject the drug.

Personnel can also use gas chambers or neck dislocation.

Employees of the organization can only shoot the birds in extreme circumstances, if they have a “skilled marksman” on the premises.
