King to Share Intimate Statement on Cancer in Nationwide Broadcast

King Charles has filmed a personal message concerning his journey with cancer, set to air as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer campaign, run by medical research organisations and a major network.

Buckingham Palace said the King would reflect on his "path to recovery" as a person living with the disease, in a televised statement on this Friday at 8pm UK time.

The message, filmed within a royal residence two weeks ago, will emphasise the vital significance of preventative health checks to increase the likelihood more people detect the condition at an initial point.

This represents a infrequent public commentary on the health of the Sovereign, who has been undergoing regular treatment since the news was shared in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will specify his type of cancer.

The Campaign's Central Purpose

The annual charity initiative each year raises funds for scientific studies and treatment and urges people to get health assessments to improve the chances of an early diagnosis.

The King's public discussion about his health challenge, and his experience as a patient, has been designed to promote education and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be taken a step further with this unique personal contribution.

To date the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to keep working, preserving a full diary alongside his ongoing course of care, and he appears not to have sought to be characterised by his illness.

This year has seen the King, 77, undertaking several overseas trips, notably to Italy and Canada, and receiving the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, including the German president recently.

Friday's Evening Programme

The upcoming Stand Up to Cancer broadcast on television, featuring presenters such as several TV personalities, will urge people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.

Each presenter have been affected by cancer - McCall said last month she had had an operation for a tumour, while Clare Balding was treated for a thyroid condition over a decade ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously spoken about his late father, who had a diagnosis and then later leukaemia.

The broadcast will reach out to the approximate millions of people in the UK who charities says are not current with national health programmes, with an website to let people see if they are able for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an attempt to clarify health tests and illustrate the importance of timely identification there will be a live broadcast from cancer clinics at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"I want to take the fear surrounding health checks and show the public that they are not isolated in this," stated a presenter.

Available National Services

At present in the UK, there are several key national health screening services - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - accessible for certain age groups.

A new preventative initiative is also being phased in for anyone at potential risk of contracting the disease, specifically targeting people of a certain age, who are smokers or have smoked in the past.

Men may discuss specific tests, but there is no national programme operational.

Funding Research

The fundraising campaign, which has generated over one hundred million pounds for many years, is supporting 73 clinical trials with 13,000 patients.

His Majesty, in a statement for guests at a reception for cancer charities in April, had discussed recognising the "intimidating and at times frightening situation" for patients and their loved ones.

But he noted his experience of coping with cancer had shown him that "periods of great challenge of illness can be alleviated by the greatest compassion," as he commended those who looked after those receiving treatment.

The Palace has not revealed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has been given. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had had a prostate procedure.
