Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
