The artist has handed over the complete sum of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the UK's independent live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release his work was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The concept that funds from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

They are one example who donated their honor prize money to charity

He is far from the only musician to give his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

When Pulp won the trophy in the year 1996 for their release the album, lead singer Cocker stated that the act would give their cash to the charity the charity.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her award among a few good causes, like the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," she shared with the media.

In recent years, they gave their prize money to the youth organization that supported their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"The victory was sufficient," said artist Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust announced it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

The first in that area and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "shares" in the properties.
