The Former French President Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody
Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time endured in jail.
This news came shortly following the ex-leader was released as he contests the court ruling related to illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to secure presidential race money linked to the government of the late Libyan dictator.
Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts
“Inside jail one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, implying the book is more about his reflections while in solitary confinement instead of a broader observation of the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.
“Silence escapes me, not present in La Santé, where noise is a lot to hear,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection grows stronger in prison.”
Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle
At his release request hearing, he participated remotely from inside the facility, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, easing this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”
“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”
Unprecedented Situation
The former president, who led the nation for a five-year term, was the first former head of an EU country and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.
Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.
Reading Material
It is not certain whether he had time to go through the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, where an innocent man ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.
Prison Conditions
The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail in Paris. Guards were stationed in the next cell.
It was stated that he consumed just yogurt during his stay because he feared any food may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.
Lawyer’s Statements
His attorney, who visited his client daily throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “There were death threats, heard shouts after dark and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”
Charges and Sentence
His incarceration began on 21 October after a Paris court sentenced him to a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to obtain election financing during his election campaign.
He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial set for early next year.
