Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently research predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – really, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as atheists or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your jacket you must offer them your pullover too.
The evident and straightforward fact that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of profound affection centered on the poor is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
