UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
